Horley Town 0 - 2 Invicta
Date: 27th November 2005
Invicta returned to league action this week and inflicted defeat for the first time this season on Horley Town who had knocked Invicta out the league Shield competition the previous week.
This was sweet revenge and no more than a spirited and determined team performance warranted over their Surrey based opponents with man of the match Matt Thompson outstanding in the centre of Invicta’s defence.
Despite an early scare that saw Whittome clear the ball off the line, keeper Kinderman was largely untroubled in the game. Invicta thought they opened the scoring when Holmes’ deep run was timed to perfection but Willers was given offside. On 21 mins, Willers got in behind the home defence from a fine Poore through ball to fire home.
The second period saw Horley push on but Invicta were resolute with Jack Freke and Jonnie Barnett dealing with the threat each time. The 2nd goal came on 70 mins when Willers and Hermitage combined and Hermitage fired home from close range.
Invicta were much improved this week and Phillips, Mason and Teddy in midfield gave Invicta more belief and thwarted any comeback from the home side.
Invicta move back to 3rd in the league.
