Welling United 7 - 0 Tonbridge Invicta
Date: 13th November 2005
Kent County Cup
Invicta U16 were given a tough draw in the 2nd round
of the Kent County
Under 16 Cup against Kent Youth U16's side Welling
United. The late
withdrawel of captain Matt Thompson due to injury did
not help Invicta but
there was enough quality in the squad to give this
cup tie a go. Glen
Nicholls took over as captain for this game.
It was
clear from the off that Welling had quality throughout
their team and
Invicta were working hard from the off to close down
play and give Welling
little time on the ball. The opening goal came on 12
mins when the pacey
Nankani ran at Nicholls and cut inside before curling
a right foot shot into
the corner.
To Invicta's credit they continued to push
on when they could with Teddy
having some joy down the left wing. It was 2-0 following
a corner that saw
an unchallenged header from 8 yards and 3-0 on the
half hour after a cross
was headed in off the post.
Welling were very much on
top and forced 2 more goals before the break to
given them a flattering scoreline at the break for
all the effort the
Invicta players were putting in. Phillips, Poore and
Mason in the Invicta
midfield were giving everything for the cause.
With
the tie as good as over Invicta showed tremendous
courage and team
spirit to keep going and never let Welling settle
or allow them to drop the
high tempo that they had set in the first period.
Holmes
replaced the injured Teddy and Whittome and Taylor
played the final
12 minutes to taste the occassion.
The home side only
added 2 more goals both of great quality in the second
period with Invicta's best chances coming from two
Jamie Mason corners that
flew across the face of goal. Credit to Tom Willers
for all the chasing and
closing down of the Welling defence, a thankless task
but again doing his
bit for the team.
Despite the result both parents and
the opposition management clearly
recognised the effort and spirit showed by the whole
Invicta team and they
can go away knowing they will not be playing a team
of that quality again
this season but will all be better off for the experience.
Invicta travel to Horley Town in the league shield next week.
