Men of the Match; Ollie Leigh, Jonnie Barnett – a strong and organised defensive display that ensured Invicta held a clean sheet and built the platform from which they went on to dominate the game in the second period.
With 4th place secured Invicta were looking to finish the season on high and make it 7 games unbeaten with 6 wins and a draw. A firm bumby pitch made it difficult for both sides to get the ball down and play as the game took the opening 15 mins to come to life.
Having spurned 2 good opportunities one producing an excellent save, Tom Willers found the net when the keeper lost the ball to put Invicta 1-0 up on 16 mins. It was 2-0 on 20 as Hermitage was brought down in the box and recovered to dispatch the penalty.
Any threat that Oxted posed was soon thwarted by Phillips and Barnett, with Leigh finding most of the play coming down Invicta right flank with Taylor on the opposite side a spectator for much of the first period.
The best goal of the half game when a Leigh throw found Mason whose pass found Hermitage and he fed Willers 12 yards out and his first time strike just before the break gave Invicta a comfortable 3-0 lead. [This also gave Tom a landmark of 40 goals this season]
The second period saw Invicta dominate and when they got the ball down and out wide began creating chances. Mason was instrumental on the right and set up 2 more goals for Thompson , a fine header and Hermitage from close range before retiring with a thigh strain.
Maurice Holmes scored his second of the season with an eloquent low shot and a fine turn on the bye line and delivery setup Willers for his 8th hat trick of the season.
The hard working Nicholls finished the scoring off from 6 yards and ensure Invicta finished the season on a high.
Well done to the whole squad and their contribution over the season and as a reward will enjoy a days paintballing when will see the true meaning of team play.
