Spitfires 0 - 1 Battlebridge
Date: 2nd April 2006
On a cold and blustery morning Invicta came up against the league's in form team who are pushing Darwin hard for the title. However the Spitfires are in good form as well and this showed in the first half with both teams passing the ball well and tackling hard for possession.
Towards the end of the first half Battlebridge started to exert pressure on the Invicta goal but, goalkeeper Joel Scott once again was in fine form keeping out the Battlebridge forwards and using the wind well to create counter attacks through the hard working Ollie Markides and Gareth Hughes. Matt Shipley was foiled by their Goalkeeper when his shot was smothered at the near post from a good pass from Ben Skinner.
The score was 0-0 at half time, but it was obvious the wind would play a big part in the second half.
Once again the Battlebridge forwards were in the ascendance and Invicta found it hard to get into their opponents half, only Markides and the hardworking Will Hinton looking likely to create any pressure on the Battlebridge defence.
The defence of Edmund Lines, Tim Ansdell and George Marling were at full stretch and needed Scott in tip top form to hold Battlebridge on numerous occasions. Battlebridge used the wind to pen Invicta into their own half and the pressure finally told 5 minutes from time, when Battlebridge scored and ran out winners 1-0, but not without being made to fight all the way by the Spitfires especially man of the match Olile Markides and the defensive unit.
This was the second time this season that one of the league's top teams had been held to just a 1-0 win with the goal coming late in the second half. All bodes well for next season.
