Tonbridge Invicta Spitfires 1 - 1 Balgowan (3 - 1 on penalties)
Date: 15th January 2006
Invicta progressed to the 2nd round of the League Trophy with a hard-earned win against an impressive Balgowan side.
Balgowan began brightly and had most of the early possession, and took the lead inside the opening five minutes. Invicta’s heads didn’t drop though and they gradually began to make their mark on the game, although Balgowan held onto a half-time lead.
In the second period Invicta began to create more chances and midway through the half Matt Shipley finished well to take the tie into extra time. No further goals were scored and this led to a nerve-racking penalty shoot out.
Both sides missed their opening penalties but Ben Skinner, Edmund Lines and Sam Carpenter all scored for Invicta whilst keeper Joel Scott emerged as the hero with a couple of great saves.
Special praise should go to Lines, Timmy Ansdell and George Marling for some tigerish defending which kept Invicta in the game at times and helped to allow them to progress to the next round.
