Moonshot 6 Tonbridge Invicta Hurricanes 0 Sunday 9th March 2008
Despite having beaten Moonshot at home, it was always likely to be a tough match against the league joint-leaders, and so it proved to be.
Almost from the kick off Moonshot were on the attack and a great early save from Stanley Hill was needed to keep them at bay. Five minutes later though a corner was not properly cleared and a Moonshot forward fired the loose ball into the net. Hurricanes rallied though: An Elliot Checkley corner found Ryan Hine in space in the box; his fierce shot was well blocked and Gabriel Russell’s follow up went just wide. Briefly, Moonshot had the advantage and a right wing break saw Stanley flying through the air to parry a fierce shot, Luke Bohanan rushing in to successfully clear the loose ball. Play swept back into the Moonshot half and Kane Joseph latched onto a through ball and larruped a fantastic shot against the crossbar. Matthew Gibbs was quickest to react but his header didn’t quite have the power to beat the keeper. Shortly after this Matt had a shot well-saved and both he and Lewis Floyd almost found ways through the crowded Moonshot area. Play shifted to the other end and some fierce strikes whistled past the Hurricanes goalposts before another one found the net, but was ruled out for offside. Another goal was going to come from somewhere. A looping shot from Kane from just outside the area looked to be it, but the Moonshot keeper made a great leap and managed to touch it onto the crossbar. And in fact it was Moonshot who got the second goal. A right wing break ended in a strong shot which Stanley brilliantly parried but Moonshot were quicker to the loose ball and although Stanley got hands to the second shot he couldn’t stop it finding the net. Hurricanes ended the half on the attack when a corner found Will Clarke three yards from the goal line (what was Will doing there?!) but his well hit shot was superbly blocked by a Moonshot defender. Hurricanes had given as good as they got and had hit the woodwork twice but at half time it was 2-0 to Moonshot.
In the second half a Harry Hine throw found George Jones on the left wing; George turned neatly inside a defender and with the outside of his right foot sent a beautiful ball into the path of Kane, resulting in a good shot, but just over the bar. But truth to tell, the less said about the second half the better.
Man of the Match, as voted by the supporters: tireless running, useful creative play and some great tackles: Lewis Floyd
