Our first game of 2007 saw us travelling away to Orpington B. An afternoon kick off had enabled a few of the boys and parents to cheer the Spitfires to victory this morning. It was very welcome to see this reversed in the afternoon with some Spitfire support.
A nice muddy pitch welcomed the boys which is hardly surprising after the amount of rain we have had. Invicta came out of the blocks quickly and straight away started testing the Orpington defence. Orpington stood firm with a combination of great defending, goalkeeping, goal line clearances. To be fair some of our finishing wasn’t as sharp as usual but that can be expected due to no games over the past few weeks... The football we played in the first half was a little scrappy but to be fair at this time of year the pitches are not in the kind of condition that enables a team to play passing football. Sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up and dig in this team does that. By half time we have managed to open up a 3 goal lead. To be fair this was going to be enough as our defence and goalkeeper (Sam, Luke and Stanley) looked like they weren’t going to get beaten. Luke closed down and brought the ball forward, Sam resisted all temptation to go forward and swept very well and Stanley was his usual self dashing from his line to stop Orpington’s attacks.
The second half was a little more one sided with six more goals being added… Stanley nearly got one from a goal kick!! Better luck next week….
As usual we manage to score goals so well done to all the goal scorers, hat-trick mentions for Kane J and Ryan. Kane F had a good, busy performance in the middle and Elliot worked hard on the left with not a lot happening for him (your week this week Els). Kieran was Mr Versatile again playing on the left, right, middle and defender. Goalie next week as I need to improve that position!! (Only joking the Hill family).
Guess what? Heading and thrown in practice at training this week... The round thing does not hurt if you head it! Honestly….
Man of the Match as voted for by the travelling fans was our very own Mr Smiler Ryan Hine
(Well done Rys)
