Canterbury City 1 v 3 Tonbridge Invicta

Invicta opened their 2010/11 campaign with an excellent away win at Hersden Rec. Under the guidance of caretaker manager Simon Dunk + Alan Figg, Invicta had 7 new debutantes in their squad who with the experienced gained last season gave a spirited and hard working display against their quality opponents. Invicta started brightly but it was Canterbury who opened the scoring on 12 mins with a smart finish from Royston Gough but Invicta were level within 2 mins when Andy Thomas' cross saw veteran striker Tony Goodyer finish from 2 yards. Canterbury improved as the half went on and had a goal from a fine move disallowed for offside. As half time approached Thompson cleared a Canterbury free kick and when Danny Black slipped a sublime pass to Andy Thomas he was clean though and finished eloquently from 18 yards.  The second half saw the home side pile on the pressure and Canterbury's 16 year old Macauley Murray perfoming well above his years orchestrating the midfield. With Sam Figg marshalling the Invicta defence and Bryan Wesson commanding in the Invicta goal, the home side were kept at bay. As the half went on an equaliser seemed inevitable but when Wesson denied Gough a second with his feet, it was going to be Invicta's day. On 90 mins Dave East got a deserved goal for his all round contribution when he broke free and cracked home a left foot shot from 18 yards. This was an excellent team effort from Invicta with contributions from every player, a welcome reward for Dunkie and Alan for their pre season efforts.
